Information about the Glossary – 2008
There are words of African root adopted in Brazil as in the religious
rites of Yoruba origin. The Film Ôrí takes words that may be from
various origins and civilization procedures; there are words of Yoruba
and others of Bantu root. And there are many regional variations of the
tongue that may be considered as well.
Historian Beatriz Nascimento selected during her time the following words
that in the Film Ôrí, come from Western Africa and other civilizations.
Angola
Denomination for the chiefs of the “Mbunbu” lineage (N’dongo Reign),
Centro-Western Africa; the first region conquered by the Portuguese in
Africa; one of the three biggest “mythic nations”; traditional African
religion in Brazil.
Axé
Yoruba term, which means: “the beginning of which becomes possible
the vital process”; the strength which ensures the dynamic existence;
it is planted in the “Terreiro” (Sacred House), where the “Orishas”
(African gods) manifest themselves, in order to allow the Sacred
House’s existence and its consecration; transmitted to the whole
members of a “Terreiro” (J. Elbein Santos, Os Nagô e a Morte).
