Information about the Glossary – 2008
There are words of African root adopted in Brazil as in the religious rites of Yoruba origin. The Film Ôrí takes words that may be from various origins and civilization procedures; there are words of Yoruba
and others of Bantu root. And there are many regional variations of the tongue that may be considered as well.
Historian Beatriz Nascimento selected during her time the following words that in the Film Ôrí, come from Western Africa and other civilizations.

Angola
Denomination for the chiefs of the “Mbunbu” lineage (N’dongo Reign), Centro-Western Africa; the first region conquered by the Portuguese in Africa; one of the three biggest “mythic nations”; traditional African religion in Brazil.

Axé
Yoruba term, which means: “the beginning of which becomes possible the vital process”; the strength which ensures the dynamic existence; it is planted in the “Terreiro” (Sacred House), where the “Orishas” (African gods) manifest themselves, in order to allow the Sacred House’s existence and its consecration; transmitted to the whole members of a “Terreiro” (J. Elbein Santos, Os Nagô e a Morte).
